After touring like maniacs on the run for a couple of years, Herman Dune finally took a break. In 2010, Cosmic Neman recorded and toured with his other duo Zombie Zombie, while David-Ivar took some time off to write and draw (with art exhibitions in New York, Paris and Milan).
With a wealth of new material they chose 15 out of a possible 20 newly recorded songs to create Strange Moosic. With a focus this time on melody and simple production, this is their most accessible record to date. Featuring David-Ivarís idiosyncratic vocals and engaging poetry, his ability to manipulate the English language to his every whim is impressive given that he was raised in Paris of Swedish and Jewish descent. Inspired by songwriters such as Bob Dylan, Chuck Berry, Jonathan Richman and David Berman, his soft accent lends a naÔve charm to his words. With Cosmic Nemanís elegant polyrhythmic drums paying tribute to Charlie Watts, Can and Mo Tucker, the duo play off each otherís strengths with the familiar ease that comes from a life-long friendship.
Adam Selzer recorded the album at his studio in Portland, where he had previously worked on albums by the likes of M Ward and The Decemberists. A perfect fit for Herman Dune, he was able to record songs played live and make them sound rich and vibrant. They also brought in the help of Ben Pleng, their long time friend and tour bass player, to join them as a three-piece in the studio. Other guests included Portland residents Rachel Blumberg and Sean Finn on backing vocals.
Strange Moosic was the first album that they recorded without having been on the road right up to recording day, so these had not been tried out in a live setting. This meant that each track was recorded separately, rehearsed and arranged in the studio, rather than being a replica of the live experience. Strange Moosic was the perfect collaboration between the core duo of Herman Dune and their Portland friends. They focused on melody and composition, which allowed each song to shine through, without hiding their beauty and simplicity. The songs were played on an acoustic guitar, the way they were originally conceived, each telling a different story but working together beautifully as a whole to create an effortlessly classic album.
